WPC80 buyers remain well covered for Q4
Both regular and instant WPC80 were assessed as softer in Week 41. Few buyers were active in the market for Q4, as most remained well covered with current stock and could afford to wait. This kept demand quiet and continued to put pressure on WPC80 prices.
For buyers, the practical procurement consideration is how long existing stock and contracted volumes cover production needs. A comfortable position allows time to compare offers. Where a delivery requirement is approaching, the buying decision also depends on suitable material being available from an approved origin within the required timeframe. A softer market direction alone does not establish the right moment for every purchase.
MPC85 firms with limited Western European availability
MPC85 moved higher again, with a high number of enquiries coming in. Availability from Western Europe was largely sold out, while Eastern Europe still had product available. Buyers looking for MPC85 therefore faced different availability depending on the region they were sourcing from.
When assessing an alternative origin, buyers generally need to confirm that the producer and manufacturing site meet their approval requirements. Specifications, documentation and application performance also need to match the intended use. Available volume becomes a practical sourcing option only when those requirements and the delivery schedule can be met.
The narrowing WPC80 spread keeps MPC85 in focus
As the price spread with WPC80 continued to narrow, MPC85 remained in focus for buyers looking at their formulations. The two markets were moving in different directions this week, with softer WPC80 and firmer MPC85. Buyers therefore had a changing price relationship to consider alongside their technical requirements.
In formulation work, price is only one part of the comparison. As a general consideration, changing the balance between milk and whey proteins can affect taste, solubility and processing performance. Buyers reviewing a formulation need to assess whether a potential ingredient change remains worthwhile after testing, approval work and the effect on the finished product are taken into account.
European WPC80 draws more demand from outside Europe
European WPC80 prices moved closer to US levels in Week 41, and we saw more demand from outside Europe. At the same time, most Q4 buyers remained well covered with current stock and could afford to wait before committing to additional purchases.
For a procurement comparison across regions, the general consideration is the delivered cost of suitable material. Freight, currency and any applicable import charges can affect that comparison. Product specifications, customer approval and delivery timing also matter. A smaller headline price gap does not by itself establish that two offers are commercially or technically equivalent.
WPI90 and Sweet Whey Powder remain stable
WPI90 remained stable, with selective interest from buyers. Sweet Whey Powder, listed as SWP in the weekly market direction, was unchanged. These assessments differed from the softer direction in WPC80 and the firmer MPC85 market.
For buyers, the general sourcing consideration is to check the requirements of the individual product and application. An unchanged weekly assessment describes market direction; a purchasing decision still requires confirmation of the specification, available volume and delivery period relevant to that order.
