European WPC80 and WPI90 Prices Move Lower — Week 39 Market Update

The European high-protein market moved lower in Week 39, with softer price levels across WPC80 and WPI90. Increased availability of competitively priced Polish-origin WPC80 is adding pressure to the wider European market. Buyers remain cautious. Lower offers are appearing, but some procurement teams are staying on the sidelines to see whether WPC80 prices have further room to fall.

More Polish-origin WPC80 enters the market

More Polish WPC80 is being offered, including material from producers that have previously been less visible in the European market.

Eastern European product is already trading at lower price levels. These transactions are putting pressure on the wider market by giving buyers a lower reference point for their bids.

However, an available product is not automatically an immediately usable product. When a less familiar producer or manufacturing location enters the market, buyers may first need to assess:

  • Producer and manufacturing-site identity
  • European approval number
  • GFSI-recognised food-safety certification
  • Technical specifications
  • Batch CoA and microbiological parameters
  • Allergen and lecithin declarations
  • Product samples and application performance
  • Traceability and delivery history

For buyers with strict approval procedures, the difference between an offered origin and an approved origin remains important.

Western European offers remain higher

Western European producers are still offering WPC80 at higher levels, creating a clear price difference between origins.

These higher levels may partly reflect established approvals, consistency, existing producer relationships and a proven delivery history. For some buyers, these factors justify a premium because they reduce the time and operational risk involved in changing supply.

For others, the widening difference provides a reason to begin qualifying Eastern European alternatives.

The relevant comparison is therefore not only the price per kilogram. Buyers must compare the delivered cost, approval timeline, application performance and operational risk of each option.

Buyers continue to wait

Some buyers remain on the sidelines, expecting the market to provide more clarity over the coming days. As lower offers appear, buyers may test how far sellers are prepared to move before making new commitments.

This approach can be commercially attractive when short-term requirements are already covered. It becomes more difficult when a buyer still needs volume for a fixed production period.

Waiting for a lower price introduces several risks:

  • Suitable volume may no longer be available
  • An approved origin may maintain a higher level
  • The approval of a new origin may take longer than expected
  • Logistics may become more difficult closer to the required delivery date
  • A market reversal may quickly remove lower offers

The right decision depends on existing coverage, production deadlines and the number of approved alternatives available—not only on expected price direction.

MPC85 loses part of its price advantage

MPC85 remains firm while WPC80 prices are moving lower. As a result, the price difference between the two products continues to narrow.

When WPC80 was trading at higher levels, MPC85 attracted attention as a potentially lower-priced protein alternative. That commercial incentive is now becoming smaller.

This does not mean the two products are interchangeable in every application. Differences in dairy composition, functionality, taste and processing behaviour can affect the finished blend. Any substitution should therefore be assessed through formulation work and application testing.

As the price spread narrows, buyers have less financial reason to accept the technical and operational work involved in reformulating away from WPC80.

European and US WPC80 prices converge

European WPC80 prices are also moving closer to US levels, reducing the price gap between the two markets.

A narrower headline price difference does not automatically make products equivalent. Comparisons should account for:

  • Freight and import costs
  • Currency movements
  • Duties and customs procedures
  • Specifications and product format
  • Lecithin type
  • Required certifications
  • Lead times
  • Origin and customer approval

Nevertheless, the narrowing spread is an important market signal. It indicates that recent downward pressure in Europe is bringing the two regions closer together after a period of greater price separation.

Outlook

The European high-protein market remains cautious. Lower Eastern European offers are putting pressure on WPC80, while Western European producers continue to defend higher price levels.

The next confirmed transactions will help show whether the market is approaching a new trading range or whether buyers can push prices lower.

At the same time, the narrowing WPC80–MPC85 spread is changing the commercial case for reformulation, while the smaller difference between European and US WPC80 provides another indication that the market is rebalancing.

What to discuss with your procurement team

  • Whether short-term coverage allows more time to wait for clearer price direction.
  • Whether a lower-priced origin can complete documentation, sampling and approval in time.
  • How the narrowing WPC80–MPC85 spread affects the commercial case for reformulation.
