Market Update · Week 38, 2026

WPC80 Softens While the Wider Protein Complex Remains Firm

The European WPC80 market softened slightly in Week 38, but the wider protein complex continues to show resilience. Most buyers are already covered for Q4, keeping immediate WPC80 demand relatively quiet. At the same time, lower-priced Eastern European offers are creating downward pressure, while premium producers continue to maintain higher offer levels.

WPC80 comes under moderate pressure

Both regular and instant WPC80 softened this week. This does not yet appear to be a sharp market correction. Instead, the movement reflects limited spot demand and increasing competition between different European origins.

Many buyers have already secured their Q4 requirements and are therefore under little immediate pressure to purchase additional volume. This allows them to wait, compare offers and test whether sellers are prepared to move towards lower bids.

For sellers, the challenge is different. They must decide whether to protect current price levels or accept lower bids to generate new business in a quiet market.

Eastern and Western European prices remain far apart

The range between available offers remains wide.

Eastern European WPC80 is being offered at more competitive levels, adding pressure from below. Premium and established Western European producers continue to offer at higher prices, supported by existing approvals, product consistency and established customer relationships.

This price difference does not automatically make the lowest offer the most suitable option. Buyers must also consider:

  • Producer and manufacturing location
  • Existing origin approval
  • Product specifications and batch consistency
  • GFSI-recognised certification
  • Functional performance in the final application
  • Documentation and traceability
  • Delivery reliability and lead time

The most competitively priced material may still require document review, sampling, application testing and customer approval before it can be used.

Some buyers are reducing WPC80 usage

High WPC80 price levels are also encouraging some manufacturers to reconsider their formulations. We are seeing buyers explore whether they can reduce the WPC80 share in certain blends.

The commercial incentive is understandable, but reformulation is rarely a simple protein-for-protein substitution. WPC80 contributes more than a declared protein percentage. Changes can affect:

  • Taste and mouthfeel
  • Solubility and dispersibility
  • Nutritional values
  • Texture and viscosity
  • Consumer acceptance
  • Label declarations
  • Production performance

Alternative proteins may reduce raw-material costs, but they must still perform in the finished product. Any reformulation therefore requires technical assessment and application testing.

A strong floor remains under the market

Despite softer WPC80 prices, there still appears to be a strong floor underneath the market. This suggests that the room for further reductions may be limited unless supply increases materially or demand weakens further.

Buyers and sellers remain far apart, and the market is still waiting for sufficient confirmed transactions to establish a clearer direction. Lower Eastern European offers are influencing expectations, but premium origins continue to resist the lower price levels.

The result is a market that is softening at the edges without yet showing signs of a broad decline.

Sweet Whey Powder remains firm

Sweet Whey Powder strengthened further in Week 38. Sentiment across the wider protein and dairy complex continues to hold up following the latest Global Dairy Trade results.

GDT does not establish European whey prices directly, but it can influence broader dairy-market sentiment. Stronger auction results may support seller confidence and affect expectations around milk values, production economics and dairy-ingredient pricing.

The firm Sweet Whey Powder market therefore provides some underlying support to the wider whey complex, even as WPC80 faces short-term pressure.

WPI90 remains quiet and stable

WPI90 was quieter again this week, with prices broadly stable. Demand appears selective rather than widespread, with buyers focusing on specific origins, specifications and applications.

Because WPI90 requirements can be highly technical, general market direction may not reflect the availability or price of every individual product. Clear WPI, Native WPI and standard WPI90 can each have different supply-and-demand dynamics.

Outlook

WPC80 entered a softer phase in Week 38, driven by strong Q4 buyer coverage, quiet spot demand and competitive offers from Eastern Europe.

However, the market is not showing an unrestricted downward movement. Premium producers continue to maintain higher levels, the wider protein complex remains firm and there appears to be limited room below current WPC80 prices.

The coming transactions will be important in determining whether this is a modest adjustment or the beginning of a broader correction.
