WPC80 Waits for Direction as Sweet Whey Powder Firms
The European WPC80 market remained stable in Week 37, with buyers and sellers still far apart on price. Limited trading activity makes it difficult to establish a clearer market direction. Sweet Whey Powder showed a firmer trend, while the WPI90 market was quieter. Within WPI, interest continues to focus on more specialised products such as Clear WPI and Native WPI.

Sweet Whey Powder availability tightens
Sweet Whey Powder is firmer this week, with Eastern European availability becoming more difficult.
We are also seeing indications that some factories are shifting part of their production from Sweet Whey Powder towards WPC. Because both products depend on access to liquid whey and drying capacity, changes in the product mix can influence the availability of individual whey ingredients.
For buyers of Sweet Whey Powder, this means that stable demand does not automatically guarantee stable supply. Origin, available volumes, production planning and delivery periods therefore require close attention.
WPC80 remains in a waiting mode
WPC80 buyers and sellers continue to have different price expectations.
Buyers remain cautious and are reluctant to move towards higher offers without clear evidence that the market is strengthening. Sellers are equally hesitant to accept lower bids while availability and production economics continue to support their current positions.
As a result, the market is waiting for confirmed transactions to establish a more credible direction.
If deals are concluded at lower levels, buyers may gain confidence to maintain or reduce their bids. Transactions at higher levels could instead signal that buyers need to secure coverage and are prepared to meet current seller expectations.
Until sufficient business is concluded, individual offers should not automatically be treated as representative of the entire market.
Limited liquidity makes price discovery difficult
In a thin market, the visible difference between bids and offers can be substantial. However, neither side of that spread necessarily represents the price at which business can actually be concluded.
This creates a challenge for procurement teams. Waiting may lead to a better purchasing level, but it also introduces the risk that suitable volume from an approved origin is no longer available when it is needed.
The buying decision therefore depends on more than expected market direction. Buyers must also consider:
- Current stock and contractual coverage
- Production forecasts and deadlines
- Availability from approved origins
- Required product functionality
- Lead times and logistical reliability
- The cost and duration of approving an alternative origin
- The operational impact of a potential shortage
A lower offer has limited practical value if the producer, product or manufacturing location has not been approved in time.
WPI90 activity is quieter
The wider WPI90 market was quieter in Week 37. Nevertheless, we continue to see interest in more specialised WPI products, particularly Clear WPI and Native WPI.
These enquiries are generally more specific than standard protein purchasing. Buyers may require a particular flavour profile, solubility, acidity performance, processing method or nutritional positioning.
This makes it important to compare more than protein percentage and price. Product specifications, samples and application testing play an important role in determining whether a particular WPI is suitable for the intended formulation.
Outlook
The WPC80 market is still looking for transactions that can provide a clearer price signal. Buyer bids and seller offers remain far apart, while neither side currently appears under enough pressure to move decisively.
At the same time, firmer Sweet Whey Powder conditions and changing production choices show that developments elsewhere in the whey complex can influence availability.
