Buyers are returning to the market
During the summer period, trading activity is traditionally quieter. With procurement teams, producers and other market participants returning to their desks, more enquiries and discussions are now taking place.
This does not automatically mean buyers are ready to commit.
Many buyers remain covered for the short term and are therefore under limited pressure to secure additional volume immediately. Instead, they are using the current period to assess availability, compare offers and determine whether present price levels can be maintained.
Is the market close to its peak?
Opinions about the next market movement remain divided.
Some participants believe whey protein prices are approaching their peak. From this perspective, buyers may benefit from waiting before securing further coverage.
Others believe there is still room for prices to move higher, particularly if availability remains restricted or demand strengthens after the holiday period.
This creates a familiar challenge for procurement teams: secure volume now and risk buying before a correction, or wait and risk facing higher prices or more limited availability later.
Stability does not remove procurement risk
A stable market can still be difficult to navigate. The absence of a price movement does not necessarily mean that supply conditions, lead times or approved availability are equally stable.
For buyers, the decision therefore extends beyond the quoted price per kilogram. Other relevant considerations include:
- Current stock and coverage
- Production forecasts and blending schedules
- Availability from approved producers and locations
- Required product variant, such as regular or instant WPC80
- Lead times and delivery reliability
- The time required for documentation, sampling and origin approval
An attractively priced offer has limited value if the origin has not been approved or the product cannot be used in the intended application.
What to watch in the coming weeks
As more market participants return, the coming weeks may provide a clearer indication of direction. The main question is whether renewed buying activity will support another upward movement or whether cautious demand will begin to put pressure on current price levels.
Until that becomes clearer, buyers are likely to remain selective: monitoring the market closely while balancing price expectations against continuity and availability.
At Roodenburg Dairy, we are active in the European whey protein market every day. Through our Weekly Whey Protein Market Note, we share the developments we observe in pricing, availability and buyer behaviour.
