WPC80 Nears MPC85 as European and US Prices Align

In Week 42, the price spread between MPC85 and WPC80 was nearly gone, while the European and US WPC80 spread had closed. WPC80 remained softer, bringing whey protein back into focus for buyers reviewing their formulations. MPC85, WPI90 and Sweet Whey Powder were stable. Many buyers remained on the sidelines, and a price gap between Eastern and Western European origins was still visible.

WPC80 moves closer to MPC85

MPC85 was no longer moving higher in price for now, while WPC80 remained softer. With the two products priced almost the same, the spread between them was nearly gone. This made whey protein interesting again for buyers reviewing the protein ingredients used in their formulations.

For formulation teams, the general consideration is whether the changing price relationship alters the commercial case for using one ingredient over another. Milk and whey proteins can differ in taste, solubility and processing behaviour. Any change still needs to work in the finished product, with testing and approval costs included in the comparison.

European WPC80 becomes more competitive globally

The price spread between European and US WPC80 had disappeared in Week 42. This brought European material into a more competitive position on the world market. The convergence of these markets does not establish a single purchasing price for every origin, specification or delivery period.

When comparing offers across regions, buyers generally need to work from delivered cost. Freight, exchange rates and any applicable import charges can change the result. Customer approval, product suitability and the timing of delivery also need to be considered before a headline price comparison becomes a sourcing decision.

Price differences between European origins remain

A gap between Eastern and Western European origins was still visible. European and US prices coming together therefore did not remove the regional price differences within Europe. Buyers comparing European offers still had to account for the origin attached to each offer.

As a general sourcing consideration, an alternative origin may require documentation review, sampling and application testing before it can be used. Documentation checks can include manufacturer details, food safety certificates, specifications and batch certificates of analysis. The practical comparison includes how long that approval takes and whether delivery can be arranged for the required production period. A price difference is most useful when both options meet the buyer's operational requirements.

Many buyers remain on the sidelines

Many buyers remained on the sidelines in Week 42, continuing the pattern seen the previous week. The closing spreads were therefore accompanied by continued hesitation among buyers.

For procurement teams, the general decision is how much room existing stock and contracted supply provide to wait. A buyer with near-term production needs may have less flexibility than one with adequate coverage. Comparing the potential benefit of waiting with approval timelines and delivery requirements helps keep a price decision connected to actual purchasing needs.

WPI90 and Sweet Whey Powder hold stable

WPI90 remained stable, supported by selective interest in the product. Sweet Whey Powder, shown as SWP in the weekly direction, was also stable. The softer WPC80 market therefore did not represent a common direction across every product in this update.

In general, buyers need to assess each ingredient against its own specification and application. A stable assessment describes the weekly direction, while a workable order still depends on suitable product being available in the required volume and delivery window.
